    The Spin Asymmetry on the Nucleon Experiment (SANE) at Jefferson Lab measures proton spin observables A{sub 1}{sup p}, A{sub 2}{sup p} and structure functions g{sub 1}{sup p} and g{sub 2}{sup p} over a broad range of Bjorken scaling variable x from to , for four-momentum transfers ranging from GeV{sup 2} to GeV{sup 2}. Data from the CCFR E neutrino deep inelastic scattering experiment at Fermilab contain events with a large Bjorken x (x>) and high momentum transfer [Q{sup 2}>50 (GeV/c){sup 2}]. A comparison of the data with a model based on no nuclear effects at large x shows a significant excess of events in the data.

    Models and nonperturbative approaches for the parton input distributions are outlined. The impact on the phenomenology of QCD of the data at very low values of the Bjorken x variable is discussed in detail.
